The volume control has a dual function with sound mute as a press button on/off displayed on the lcd. The tuning button has two extra functions on the press button function one" slow push" is signal mute between stations, again displayed on screen. Function two is "long push" on button to get level for inter station sound mute, this helps to remove low poor unwanted stations which are annoying when tuning between stations. The audio out from the radio is very good and will drive small loudspeakers with sound to spare. The FM tuner I recieved was of a slightly different version than the one showed in the description. It works very well as a FM tuner. Very sensitive and good sound. Picks up all local FM channels without antenna. The downsides of the new version is that the rotary knobs work anti-clockwise. The sound is dedreased when you turn the knob clockwise. And the frequency decreases when you turn the knob clockwise. Not what you would expect! I have not been able to make contact with the new version through the serial port. The new version also has a totally undocumented "G R S V" port with unknown function? So it is a good tuner but the total lack of documentation is frustrating. Also don't like the "anti-clockwise" function of the knobs on the new version.
